Skiing in Sochi
For most GCC travellers, Sochi is a first experience on snow - and that is exactly what makes it work. The beginner slopes are generous, ski schools are available, and there is none of the intimidation you find at long-established European ski destinations.
Where to ski
The Krasnaya Polyana area is the ski destination, containing several resorts of which Rosa Khutor is the most prominent. Slopes are spread across ability levels, with dedicated beginner zones kept separate from advanced runs.
The season
The snow season typically runs December to March, varying with altitude and conditions each year. January and February are the most reliable for snow and simultaneously the busiest. Check current snow conditions before booking, as seasons vary year to year.
If it is your first time
Do not buy equipment. Rental is available at the resort and covers everything you need, at a fraction of the cost of buying and carrying gear from the Gulf. Winter clothing can be rented too. Take a lesson on day one. Beginners who start with a single lesson enjoy the rest of the trip far more than those who try to teach themselves. If you are with young children, the sledging areas are an excellent alternative to full skiing and need no instruction at all.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. There are dedicated beginner areas and ski schools, and it is one of the more approachable destinations for a first experience on snow.
No. Rental is available at the resorts covering both equipment and winter clothing, and it is the practical choice for most visitors.
The cable cars run for non-skiers too and give the best views, and the mountain village has restaurants, cafes and walking areas. That makes a mountain trip work even when half the group does not ski.
