Krasnaya Polyana
Krasnaya Polyana is the broader name for the mountain area behind Sochi, which contains several villages and resorts - Rosa Khutor being one of them. Understanding that distinction saves a lot of confusion when booking accommodation.
How it differs from Rosa Khutor
Rosa Khutor is the most developed and lively resort inside the Krasnaya Polyana area: an organised village, an extensive cable-car network, restaurants and shops. The rest of the area is quieter and closer to its original mountain character. The choice is simple: Rosa Khutor if you want activity and facilities, the wider Krasnaya Polyana if you want quiet and nature.
What to do here
Walking the mountain trails and forests, visiting the waterfalls and mountain lakes, and riding the cable cars between peaks. In winter, skiing is the main activity with slopes for beginners through to advanced. The area is also a good base for day trips into the wider natural areas of the Western Caucasus.
Who it suits
It suits travellers who want nature and quiet over activity, and families who prefer a slower pace. The relatively cool air even in summer makes it the first choice for GCC travellers in July and August.
Frequently asked questions
No. Krasnaya Polyana is the wider mountain area, and Rosa Khutor is one resort within it - the best known and most developed.
Two to three nights. Fewer makes the transfer not worth it, and more than three only makes sense if skiing or hiking is the main purpose of the trip.
Noticeably cooler than the coast, and the gap widens with altitude. That is the main reason GCC travellers spend the hottest summer days up here rather than at the coast.
